Engineering Context
CNC part pricing is not simply material weight multiplied by a raw-stock rate. The finished cost includes material utilization, machine time, setup work, tool wear, finishing, inspection, packaging and the effect of production quantity. Prototypes and repeat orders therefore have different cost structures.
Process and Design Choices
An estimator first selects a blank and process route, then reviews cutting operations, setups, tooling, secondary treatment and outside processes. Multi-face access, thin walls, deep cavities and difficult materials can change cycle time substantially. Stable fixtures and proven programs may improve repeatability on recurring batches.

Common Problems and Risks
Unnecessary close tolerances or surface finishes can add cutting passes and measurement work. Conversely, quotations that omit deburring, coating, corrosion protection or required records may look cheaper while covering less scope. Compare offers on identical deliverables.
What to Specify and Check
Give the supplier the revision-controlled drawing, material, annual usage, lot size, critical features and finish requirements. Request a transparent breakdown for stock, blank manufacture, machining, tooling, heat treatment and testing. It is easier to improve a quotation when both sides understand its main cost drivers.
Illustrative Application (Not a Customer Case)
For one flange drawing, one supplier may quote full machining from stock while another proposes a casting plus CNC route. Material yield, tooling investment and cutting time differ. Compare the same accepted finished part rather than a single hourly rate.
Practical FAQ
FAQ: Why do prototypes cost more per piece? Programming, setup, fixturing and first-article inspection are fixed activities spread over a small quantity.
Information for a Manufacturing Review
For a drawing-based custom component, provide the controlled 2D or 3D drawing, material specification, expected quantity, critical features and applicable inspection requirements. Final manufacturing and acceptance criteria should be agreed in the project documentation.
