Changing the CNC Machining Design to Reduce Customer Costs

The customer originally planned to make this component as an investment casting and finish it by CNC machining. When we studied the drawing, we noticed that this approach would leave some sections unnecessarily heavy and increase the casting cost.

We discussed another route with the customer. The tubular section would be cast with a hollow interior, the head would be forged, and the two parts would then be welded together. CNC machining would take care of the critical dimensions after joining.

For this particular part, the revised process reduced weight, kept the scrap rate low and brought the unit price down by about 30% compared with the original plan. It was a useful reminder that choosing the right process can matter as much as the machining quotation itself.
